Umberto de Pretto

Secretary General, IRU

Umberto de Pretto has served as the Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) since June 2013. He joined IRU in 1995 as Head of Economic Affairs, later becoming Policy Coordinator, Head of Strategy, and Deputy Secretary General in 2002. Under his leadership, Mr. de Pretto envisions IRU driving the road transport industry towards innovation and ensuring its readiness for future challenges and opportunities. Born in Ottawa, Mr. de Pretto holds dual Canadian and Italian citizenship. He graduated in Political Science and International Relations from Carleton University in Ottawa. Early in his career, he worked as a Legislative Assistant for Canadian Ministers and Members of Parliament. In 1992, he moved to Paris to lead the Transport Division at the International Chamber of Commerce, later becoming Deputy Director responsible for International Commercial Practices and Techniques.
